# Upgrade Your Controller and Gateways

> This page explains how to perform single-version Controller and Gateway upgrade using either CoPilot (recommended) or Controller UI. Choose a tab below.

This page explains how to perform single-version Controller and Gateway upgrade
using either **CoPilot** (recommended) or **Controller UI**. Choose a tab below.

      If your Controller version is 7.0 or earlier, use Controller UI for the

    This page instructs you on how to perform single-version Controller and Gateway
    upgrade via the CoPilot UI.

    ## Before Upgrade

    Before upgrading your Controller and Gateways, it is highly recommended to check
    the <a href={"/docs/enterprise/" + "10.1" +
      "/guides/maintenance/upgrade-overview"}>Upgrade Overview</a>.

    * You must upgrade the Controller first, ensuring it is at the desired release
      version.
    * Once the Controller upgrade is completed successfully, you proceed to upgrade
      the Gateways.

    ### Review the Pre-upgrade Tasks

    Check and perform all the pre-upgrade tasks. See details in <a href={"/docs/enterprise/" + "10.1" +
      "/guides/maintenance/controller-upgrade-planning"}>Pre-upgrade Tasks for
    Controller and Gateways</a>.

    ### Check the Upgrade Checklist

    Perform all the items listed in the upgrade checklist. See details in <a href={"/docs/enterprise/" + "10.1" +
      "/guides/maintenance/controller-upgrade-checklist"}>Upgrade Checklist of the
    Controller and Gateway Upgrade</a>.

    The following table outlines the steps involved in upgrading the Controller and
    Gateways when upgrading between different versions.

    | Upgrade From | Upgrade To | Steps                                                       |

    | 7.1          | 7.2        | Upgrade Controller to 7.2, then upgrade Gateways to 7.2     |
    | 7.1          | 7.2.x      | Upgrade Controller to 7.2.x, then upgrade Gateways to 7.2.x |

    ## Upgrade your Controller

    Perform the following steps to upgrade your Controller to a desired version:

    1. Log into your CoPilot.
    2. Go to **Administration** > **Maintenance** > **Controller Upgrade**.
    3. Select the **Target Version** to which you want to upgrade. By default, it
       will upgrade to the latest version of the current release. Alternatively, you
       can specify a specific release version.
    4. Click **Run Readiness Check** and resolve any **Failed (Blocker)** issues
       before you continue. See <a href={"/docs/enterprise/" + "10.1" +
       "/guides/maintenance/controller-upgrade-readiness-check"}>Readiness Check for
       the Aviatrix Controller Upgrade</a>.
    5. Follow the on-screen prompts to start the Controller upgrade process.

    ## Upgrade your Gateways

    Perform the following steps to upgrade your Gateways to a desired version:

    1. Log into your CoPilot.

    2. Go to **Administration** > **Maintenance** > **Gateway Upgrade**.

    3. Create or select an upgrade group and choose the gateways you want to
       upgrade. However, please note that the system will upgrade the Controller
       first and then the gateways.
       1. Click **Run Readiness Check** to check for potential issues.
       2. (Optional) If any issues are reported, address and fix them accordingly.
       3. Click **Prepare For Upgrade** to upgrade the selected gateways.

    4. Alternatively, go to **Cloud Fabric** > **Gateways** > **Gateway
       Management** and click **Software Upgrade**.
       1. Select the gateways you want to upgrade.
       2. Click **Actions** > **Upgrade Software**.

    5. Wait for the upgrade process to complete and verify that you receive a
       successful upgrade message.

    | Upgrade HA (High Availability) gateways first, then upgrade primary gateways:                                                                                                                                  |                                                                 |
    | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
    | To ensure proper continuity and system availability, it is recommended to upgrade HA gateways before upgrading primary gateways. This sequence minimizes any potential disruptions during the upgrade process. | After upgrading your HA gateways, upgrade the primary gateways. |

    ## Verify your Upgrade Status

    After performing an upgrade, it is important to <a href={"/docs/enterprise/" +
      "10.1" + "/reference/ui/administration/maintenance"}>verify your upgrade
    status</a>.

      You can also perform Controller Upgrade and gateway upgrade from CoPilot UI if
      your Controller version is 7.1 or later. Go to *CoPilot* > *Settings* >
      *Maintenance* > *Upgrade*. See the [CoPilot](#copilot) tab for details.

    This page instructs on how to perform single-version Controller and Gateway
    upgrade via the Controller UI.

    ## Before Upgrade

    ## Upgrade your Controller

    Perform the following steps to upgrade your Controller to a desired version:

    1. Log in to your Controller UI.
    2. Go to *SETTINGS* > *Maintenance*, click *Upgrade* to open the upgrade
       panel.
    3. Under the *Platform Upgrade* section, enter the release number to which you
       want to upgrade. By default, it will upgrade to the latest version of the
       current release. Alternatively, you can specify a specific release version.
    4. Click *PLATFORM UPGRADE* to initiate the Controller upgrade process.

    ## Upgrade your Gateways

    Perform the following steps to upgrade your Gateways to a desired version:

    1. Log in to your Controller UI.
    2. Go to *SETTINGS* > *Maintenance*, click *Upgrade* to open the upgrade
       panel.
    3. Go to the *Selective Gateway Upgrade* section, choose the gateways you want
       to upgrade from the dropdown list. However, please note that the system will
       upgrade the Controller first and then the gateways.
    4. Click *Dry Run* to check for potential issues.
    5. (Optional) If any issues are reported, address and fix them accordingly.
    6. Click *SOFTWARE UPGRADE* to upgrade the selected gateways. To perform an
       image upgrade, click *IMAGE UPGRADE*.
    7. Wait for the upgrade process to complete and verify that you receive a
       successful upgrade message.

    <Note>
      Upgrade HA (High Availability) gateways first, then upgrade primary gateways:

      To ensure proper continuity and system availability, it is recommended to
      upgrade HA gateways before upgrading primary gateways. This sequence minimizes
      any potential disruptions during the upgrade process. After upgrading your HA
      gateways, upgrade the primary gateways.
